Lesson 11B: Different Types of Submissions and Definitions to Know

Regular Decision: The typical route

– General Deadline: [show-hide] Jan 1st – Feb 15th [/show-hide]
– Competitive colleges may be as early as [show-hide] Dec. 1st [/show-hide]
– Less competitive colleges: [show-hide] May or June [/show-hide]

– Response by:  [show-hide] April 1st [/show-hide]

Advantages of Regular Decision:
[show-hide] – More time to improve your test scores
 – Share your 1st semester Senior year grades [/show-hide]

Drawbacks:
[show-hide] – Fewer spots will be available if you wait [/show-hide]

Early Action: A relatively new practice – get it early, find out early

– General Deadline:  [show-hide] Oct. 15 – Nov. 15 [/show-hide]
– Response by:  [show-hide] Dec. 15th [/show-hide]

– Go on winter break with an acceptance letter!

Advantages of Early Action:
[show-hide] – You look motivated and together
 – Find out early [/show-hide]

Drawbacks:
[show-hide] – Can’t put off tests
 – You have to start getting things ready early [/show-hide]

Fun Fact
More schools are shifting to Early Action instead of Early Decision because they do not want to bind their students.

Early Decision: Only if you’re certain

– May even [show-hide] double [/show-hide]your chances of getting into the school you want to attend.
– General Deadline: [show-hide] Starting in October [/show-hide]

– Response by: [show-hide] Dec. 15th [/show-hide]

Advantages of Early Decision:
[show-hide] – Increase your chances of acceptance
 – Look motivated and committed to the school [/show-hide]

Drawbacks:
[sho-hide] – Legally binding (you have to attend!)
 – You can only apply to 1 school early decision
 – You only have 1 financial aid package, so you have to take it [/show-hide]

WARNING
Yes, Yes, other schools will find out if you have applied to early decision to more than one school! So know that you have to be 100% committed to that school.

Rolling Admissions

This is the how the majority of colleges process applications.
– Once they receive the application, they begin to evaluate that applicant.
– You’ll typically get a response within [show-hide] 6 to 8 weeks. [/show-hide]

Advantages of Rolling Admissions:
[show-hide]  – The earlier…. the better
 – Consider your application more than once [/show-hide]

Just because you get a rejection letter in the mail doesn’t mean you can’t get in. You can resubmit test scores and senior year grades for them to reconsider your application.

Disadvantages of Rolling Admissions:
[show-hide] – Late applicants have a much less chance of getting in
 – Spots fill up more quickly [/show-hide]

National Candidate Response Date

On May 1st, you have [show-hide] to let the college know if you are going to attend. [/show-hide]
Also, your [show-hide] housing information and deposits [/show-hide] are due to the school.

Liberal Arts College

– A [show-hide] multidisciplinary approach [/show-hide] to college so you study all kinds of subjects.
– Liberal Arts Colleges are great for people who love [show-hide] to read, write, and learn. [/show-hide]
– Unlike large Universities, where you focus primarily on your major, Liberal Arts Colleges will expect you to take [show-hide] a variety of courses [/show-hide] in order to receive your degree.

Your Transcript
 – A record of your all your classes and grades.

Where do I get it? [show-hide] The registrar at your school [/show-hide]

You can’t send the transcript to the schools yourself. Instead, your high school sends [show-hide] an official transcript [/show-hide] to the colleges you are applying to.

Don’t delay, and ask for a copy of your transcript early!
